These instructions should allow you to connect to K-State unix and run Matlab or Mathematica.

From KSU Public Lab machines (Hale Library)

Windows computers
  1. Find "Xming" (in the All Programs list) and start it
  2. Find "Putty" (in the All Programs list) and start it
    [ PuTTY is pre-configured to connect to unix.ksu.edu
    with "Enable X11 forwarding" already checked ]
  3. in the PuTTY terminal window, login with your eID and password
  4. You are at a command prompt so you can type either command:
    • mathematica
    • matlab
Macintosh computers
  1. Open Finder; navigate to Applications/Utilities and start "X11"
  2. in the xterm window, type: xhost unix.ksu.edu
  3. in the xterm window, type: ssh -X your_eID@unix.ksu.edu
  4. enter your eID password when prompted
  5. You are at a command prompt so you can type either command:
    • mathematica
    • matlab

Microsoft Windows

    Download XMing and Putty from this link
  2. Install Software

    Run the installers for both programs, one at a time.
  3. Configure Putty

    • Run Putty
    • Click on Tunnels and make sure the Enable X11 forwarding box is checked
    • Click on Session, Click Default Settings, then Save
  4. Install and Configure VPN

    (You do not have to do anything with the VPN if you are on campus and not behind a firewall or home router)

  5. Connect to unix

    You will have to do this each time you run the software
    • Connect to the VPN.
    • Run XMing
    • The first time you run, you might get a security alert, just click unblock
    • Run Putty, type in unix.ksu.edu as the host name, and click Open
    • The first time you connect, you will get a warning box, just click yes.
    • Log in with your k-state eID and password
  6. Run the software

    You are at a command prompt so you can type either command:
    • mathematica
    • matlab

Connect from Unix

  1. Make sure Xwindows is installed on your system
  2. open a terminal or xterm window (Under Applications / Accessories in Gnome)
  3. ssh -Y eID@unix.ksu.edu
    (replace eID with your own K-State eID)
  4. Run the software
    You are at a command prompt so you can type either command:
    • mathematica
    • matlab

Connect from Macintosh

  1. Open Finder; navigate to Applications/Utilities and start "X11"
  2. in the xterm window, type: ssh -Y eID@unix.ksu.edu
    (replace eID with your own K-State eID)
  3. enter your eID password when prompted
  4. Run the software
    You are at a command prompt so you can type either command:
    • mathematica
    • matlab
